10 Common Questions Beginners have about E-Cigarettes

1. Are E-Cigarettes Safer Than Smoking?

Yes. Experts in the UK think that E-Cigarettes are about 95% safer than smoking traditional cigarettes. E-Cigarettes are not known to contain any cancer causing agents are chemicals that cause heart disease and other conditions associated with cigarette smoking. Cigarette smoking is an extremely dangerous activity and is the leading cause of preventable death worldwide.

2. Is Nicotine Dangerous?

Nicotine doesn't cause smoking related illness such as cancer and heart disease, however it is addictive. There are some misconceptions regarding nicotine juice and its potential to poison individuals. In fact there are no known cases of nicotine poisoning from E-juice when used in an E-Cigarette. Bottles of nicotine should be kept out of reach from pets and children just as you would household cleaners. Like with all nicotine replacement therapies you may feel lightheaded if the nicotine concentration is more than what you are used to so purchase a lower nicotine concentration eliquid if you experience this.

3. Is It Ok to Smoke and Vape at the same Time?

Yes. There is no evidence to suggest that smoking and vaping at the same time is any worse than just smoking cigarettes. The main health benefits are seen when people quit cigarette smoking completely and move to vaping. Quitting cigarettes should always be the goal but for some people there may be a transition period where they smoke and vape and this is considered to be fine.

4. Do any Stop Smoking Services recommend E-Cigarettes?

Yes. There a number of countries that have stop smoking services who will help guide you on your transition to E-Cigarettes. There are also a number of experts in Australia who can advise on the benefits of switching to E-Cigarettes. Colin Mendelsohn is one such Expert in Australia and www.nhs.uk/smokefree/help-and-advice/e-cigarettes has lots of information on using E-Cigarettes to help you quit smoking.

5. How should I use my e-cigarette to help me to stop smoking?

Using an e-cigarette is a little different to smoking a cigarette. It usually involves taking slower and longer puffs. This is because e-cigarettes heat a coil in an eliquid . You may find you need to take a few puffs on an e-cigarette at times when you wouldn’t have smoked, but this is nothing to worry about, and the way you use your e-cigarette will develop over time. It’s not like a cigarette, which you smoke from start to finish. With an ecigarette you can use it once or twice, and then put it away. If you find you’ve got it in your mouth all the time, you might need to use an eliquid with a higher concentration of nicotine.

6. Which e-cigarette should I start with?

There are many different styles of ecigarettes on the market and for someone who is just starting out it can be a bit confusing. ECigOz stocks a range of ecigarettes that are suited to the beginner. The Endura T18 is a great starter kit. Over time you will learn what features might be useful for you. Tank size, battery life and the size of the pen can be considerations but it all depends on the individual Check out our buying guide to learn more about buying your first ecigarette.

7. Do e-cigarettes produce harmful chemicals or blow up?

Some studies have found chemicals in e-cigarette vapour that are known to cause health problems. But these studies have tended to use artificial conditions, and when good quality e-cigarettes are used normally (e.g. not overheated), there are far fewer harmful chemicals present in the vapour than in tobacco smoke. If the e-liquid is being overheated it tends to produce an acrid, unpleasant taste – you’ll know if this happens. Like any device that uses a lithium ion battery such as your mobile, portable battery, proper care must be taken when charging and using the device. Always use the charger supplied with the device to charge it and never charge unattended. Check out our battery safety guide for more information.

8. Will e-cigarettes be cheaper for me than smoking?

Yes, you will definitely be able to see significant savings using and ecigarette. You can pick up a suitable starter kit for beginners for as little as $35. Nicotine ejuice starts at $6 for 10ml and $15 for 30ml. Moderate users can expect to use about 10mls of eliquid per week. It is important to make sure the nicotine concentration is adequate so you don't fnd yourself puffing all day.

9. Can I use e-cigarettes in places where I can’t smoke?

No, the laws in Australia have changed recently and in most states you are not allowed to use an ecigarette in non smoking areas such as bars, train stations etc. Even though the law can be a bit hazy in places it is always best as a rule of thumb to not use an ecigarette in a place where you would not normally smoke a cigarette. There is no smell from an ecigarette so stealth vaping may be worth considering.

10. Is second-hand vapour from e-cigarettes dangerous? How can I protect my children?

Unlike smoking cigarettes, ecigarettes produce no chemicals that cause conditions normally associated with smoking. There is no evidence to suggest that second-hand vapour is dangerous to others. Some studies have shown that any trace toxins that may be produced are in such low concentration that they don't pose any risk to those around you. Ecigarette should not be used by anyone who is not already smoking cigarettes, they are a NRT and should only be used for this purpose.
